Edges of the Mind: Science, Humanity, and Schizophrenia With Dr. David Pickar
About the Episode
For more than fifty years, Dr. David Pickar has stood at the absolute forefront of psychiatric research and neuroscientific discovery. As the former Chief of the Experimental Therapeutics Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and a long-standing member of the FDA’s Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee, Dr. Pickar has not only witnessed the evolution of modern psychiatry—he helped shape it.
In this episode of the Nature and Science Podcast, host Donald Murphy engages in a warm, wide-ranging, and deeply human conversation with Dr. Pickar about his life’s work and new book, Edges of the Mind: Treating Schizophrenia as Psychiatry Evolves.
Moving effortlessly between high-level neuroscience and intimate bedside stories, Dr. Pickar sheds light on the biological realities of schizophrenia, the triumphs and pitfalls of psychopharmacology, and what severe mental illness reveals about human perception, consciousness, and the mind itself.
Whether reflecting on five decades of breakthrough research at Yale and NIMH or discussing the essential role of physician empathy in modern medicine, Dr. Pickar delivers a masterclass in science, ethics, and humanity.
